Cyber-attack on airports: EU agency has identified the malware

Hackers carried out a cyber attack on Friday on the company that provides passenger registration and screening systems at several European airports - Major problems in Heathrow, Brussels and Berlin

Newsroom September 22 12:22

The EU’s cybersecurity agency (ENISA) said today that problems seen since Friday in European airport automatic check-in systems are due to malware (ransomware).

“The type of ransomware has been identified. Law enforcement forces have launched an investigation,” ENISA noted in a statement.

Hackers on Friday carried out a cyberattack on Collins Aerospace, which provides passenger recording and screening systems at several European airports, causing problems at Britain’s Heathrow airport – the busiest in Europe – as well as those in Brussels and Berlin.

The Berlin airport is still operating with obstacles, while more than 92,000 travellers are expected at the airport today – a significantly higher than normal number due to the marathon held in the German capital yesterday.

Earlier today, Collins noted that it was working with the airports affected by the cyberattack and added that it was in the final stages of upgrading its software, which is necessary to fully restore its functionality.
