The items up for auction: Wines, medicine, safe boxes, roulette tables, and solar parks

The strangest items to go — or soon go — under the hammer come from banks that have closed and bankrupt casinos, including shares of a Christian brotherhood and Saudi yachts

Newsroom October 13 08:07

While real estate of all kinds — from small apartments to luxury villas, factories to hotels — dominates the lists of electronic auctions, the “canvas” of the thousands of gavel strikes that have taken place or will take place in the near future is made up not only of property but also of movable items.

These include ships and luxury recreational vessels, works of art, stocks, antique motorcycles, as well as wines, aircraft hangars, solar parks, medicines, safes, machinery, buses, and even roulette tables, slot machines, and blackjack tables. Of course, scheduled auctions may be postponed if objections or other legal actions are filed.

Works of Art

Although less common, paintings by renowned artists have appeared at electronic auctions. Recently, on Thursday, October 2, one such auction was held against a person initially residing in Kolonaki, later in Cyprus, and now listed as “unknown residence” in the seizure report.

The auction was initiated by the Moustakeio Androu bequest (from Petros Moustakas), with nine paintings offered at two-thirds of their estimated value, all of which found new owners.

The highlight was Dimitris Mytaras’ painting “Two Figures” (signed, acrylic on canvas, 100 x 100 cm), valued at €8,000, which started at €6,500 and sold for €11,250. Yiannis Kottis’ “Orange Tree” (signed and dated 2003), valued at €8,000, started at €6,000 and sold for €7,510. Antonis Kyriakoulis’ “Lady with a Hat”, valued at €4,000, started at €3,000 and was sold for €3,011. Other works by Yiannis Logothetis (LoGo), Giorgos Iliopoulos, Giorgos Stathopoulos, Kornilios, and Yashpal Chandrakar went for starting bids of €250–€500 and sold for €1 more than the starting price.

Another notable case, which had become a “serial story” two years ago, concerned the collection of the late charcuterie industrialist Panagiotis Nikas, which includes 325 paintings by various artists, including Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika’s “Acropolis”, initially valued at €30,000. Other works were valued between €250 and €2,500. The auction also included a mirror and two bronze ceiling lights.

The first auction, initiated by PQH as the special liquidator of the Postal Savings Bank (ATE), took place on January 11, 2023, and the second on April 5, 2023, with a total starting price of €144,970 — both were unsuccessful. Subsequent auctions lowered the price to €115,976 and then €94,230, with the final auction on July 28, 2023, also failing to find a buyer.

Shares

Stock packages have also been popular in electronic auctions. Recently, the engineering company Kastat and its owner Vasilis Tatoulis, brother of former minister and Peloponnese governor Petros Tatoulis, faced auction for shares in Palladion Rehabilitation and Daycare Center S.A. near Tripoli.

The first auction on March 19, 2025, by Cepal, was canceled due to lack of bidders. After objections, the market value and starting price jumped from €466,774 to €3,983,092 for 134,337 common shares (€29.65 per share). A second auction on June 27 yielded no results, and another is scheduled for October 23 for 150,487 shares, starting at €3,670,973. The total share capital of Palladion is €5,401,460, divided into 540,146 shares at €10 each.

In another case, a dispute arose between the Christian Brotherhood “Lydia” in Asprovalta and the broadcasting company 4E, leading to a scheduled auction on November 12 for 30,000 shares, valued at €4 each, totaling €120,000, with a starting bid of €80,000.

Shares related to shipping companies have also gone under the hammer. On October 8, shares in the shipping company Diamond Lines, deposited in the Deposit and Loans Fund, were scheduled with an estimated value of €15,000 per lot and a starting bid of €10,000, but no sale occurred.

Recently, shares of the Bank of Chania, held by LANE Shipping Company (bankrupt since May 2023), were auctioned. After several rounds and price reductions, the 150,005 shares finally sold for €465,500.

Ships and Yachts

Auctions have included ships and recreational vessels. The passenger-car ferry Olympus was sold for $1,755,100, just $100 above its starting price. Cargo ship Calypso I went for €306,100 after starting at €100,000.

Luxury yachts, such as the 72-meter Elegant 007 (valued at €1.8M, seized for €37,538) and the 85-meter Grand Ocean, scheduled with starting bids of €1.2M and $15M respectively, often saw postponed or canceled auctions. Historic yachts like the 1944 Lady L, with a starting price of €1.5M, remained unsold.

Aircraft Hangars

A unique case involves an aircraft hangar at Pachi Megara Airport, belonging to Greek Airman S.A., with a starting bid of €95,000. The hangar has yet to be sold despite several auction attempts.

Casino Equipment

Even casino equipment is up for auction, such as the Rio Casino, including 14 John Huxley roulette tables (€1,000 each), 10 blackjack tables, 4 stud poker tables (€1,000 each), 233 slot machines (€1,200–€1,600 each), and two electronic roulette tables (€3,000 each).

Solar Parks

Solar parks are also being auctioned. A small station in the Larissa area, consisting of 225 black monocrystalline panels (445W each), 434 polycrystalline panels, three sun-tracking systems, and a three-phase grid inverter, has a starting bid of €66,895.

Antique Motorcycles

Two BMW motorcycles from 1953, considered antiques, are scheduled for auction on October 15, with starting bids of €14,250 each.

Hotel Equipment

Hotel equipment is also auctioned, including kitchens, chairs, tables, chandeliers, coffee machines, plates, glasses, and other items. A scheduled auction values these items at €90,210, with a starting bid of €60,140.

Fish Farms and Medicines

Fish farming equipment, such as 25 used round cages, was offered at €600 each but found no buyers. Medicines from a pharmacy, valued at €105,000, sold for €70,001.
