Gmail: over 180 million passwords leaked – How to know if your account has been compromised

The leak includes millions of Gmail accounts and passwords, with Google suggesting users check their accounts

Newsroom October 27 06:21

In April 2025, the leak of a total of 183 million accounts and passwords became public knowledge, according to Troy Hunt, head of the Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) database. The leak includes passwords of Gmail users.

HIBP allows users to check if their details have been found on leak lists. As Hunt explained, the files contained mainly three types of data: website addresses, email addresses and passwords.“When someone logs into Gmail, the email address and password are logged at gmail.com, so that’s where this data comes from,” he added.

Google stresses that the leak involves broad information theft activity that affects many types of online services. To protect Gmail users, the company suggests enabling two-step authentication (2FA) and using passwords instead of traditional passwords.

Users who believe their account has been compromised are advised to log in immediately and check their account activity. Google also has a password reset process in the event of major leaks, such as the recent one.
