A detention warrant for intentional homicide and attempted homicide — serially and jointly — has been issued against the 48-year-old member of the Kargakis family, who was arrested at his home on Thursday afternoon, as part of the investigation into the bloody clash in Vorizia Heraklion, which cost two men their lives.

At the same time, Authorities are sweeping the area and have already located numerous weapons and ammunition, while more than 300 people and homes have been checked resulting also in detentions.

According to information, the 48-year-old denies the charges, reportedly stating he “doesn’t need weapons in his life” and claiming that “his word is his weapon.” He is well-known in the area for his involvement in public affairs and is expected to be brought before Justice within the day, under strict security measures.

The 48-year-old appears to be the second person recorded in the video of the clash, together with his 43-year-old brother-in-law, Fanouris Kargakis, against whom a warrant has also been issued for the same charges. The 43-year-old has been given time to testify on Monday.

Seven arrests and two pre-trial detentions
Greek Police announced that the investigation into the deadly clash is in full progress under the supervision of the Heraklion Violent & Organized Crime Directorate (Υποδιεύθυνση Δίωξης & Εξιχνίασης), in cooperation with the Organized Crime Division and the Phaistos Police Department.

So far, seven people have been arrested as directly involved — either in flagrante or after warrants — as well as two more (a 17-year-old and a 56-year-old) for harboring and for neglecting supervision of a minor, respectively.

Two men aged 25 and 30 have already testified before the investigating magistrate and prosecutor and were remanded in pre-trial detention.

Searches and weapons seizures
With the assistance of EKAM, OPKE, TAE units and other services of the Crete Regional Police Directorate, the following have been conducted so far:

• 27 house searches
• 21 searches in livestock farms and other premises
• 17 detentions
• and 352 inspections of persons and vehicles

Weapons, ammunition and various items have been found and seized during the searches and have been sent for laboratory examination. Greek Police underline that searches are continuing intensively, in cooperation with the Heraklion Investigating Magistrate, in order to identify all involved parties and fully solve the case of the bloody Vorizia incident.
