Greta Thunberg fined and banned from entering Venice

After participating in the action of activists who painted the water green in central parts of the lagoon

Newsroom November 24 10:51

A 48-hour entry ban and a €150 fine were imposed on Greta Thunberg and 35 other activists from the group Extinction Rebellion after they dyed the water green in rivers, canals, and fountains across ten Italian cities, including Venice.

The activists painted Venice’s Grand Canal green using what they claimed was eco-friendly paint as part of the “Stop Ecocide” protest, held in conjunction with the COP30 summit taking place in Brazil.

In Venice, where Greta Thunberg was present, the activists also marched among tourists on the Rialto Bridge. Luca Zaia, governor of the Veneto region, condemned the action as “an act of disrespect to the city and our history,” adding, “It is a gesture that may have consequences for the environment.”
