War in Ukraine: Poland took off its aircraft after the morning Russian bombings

Damage to Ukraine's energy network and widespread power cuts in the country

Newsroom December 23 10:41

Russia attacked Kyiv and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure early this morning, causing emergency power cuts and making Polonia, a NATO member country, to take off fighter jets to protect its airspace, two days after the conclusion of US-brokered peace talks in Miami.

The peace talks, held over the weekend in Miami, were attended by U.S. officials with delegations from Ukraine and Europe, while separate contacts were held with Russian representatives.

At 08:20 (GMT), air alerts were declared across most of Ukraine, according to the country’s air force. Debris fell near a residential building in Kiev’s Svyatoshinsky district, breaking glass panes, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said via Telegram.

Ukraine’s energy ministry said that emergency power cuts were carried out in a number of regions, including Kyiv and the surrounding area, after Russia again attacked energy facilities.

The Ukrainian electricity company Ukrenergo announced a “massive missile and drone attack” and clarified that damage restoration work will begin as soon as the security situation allows.

Russia has repeatedly hit Ukraine’s energy grid and energy facilities in the nearly four-year war, stepping up strikes in the winter to cut electricity and heating, intensifying pressure on supplies and the economy, and increasing pressure on Kiev.

Poland, a NATO member state bordering western Ukraine, said Polish and allied aircraft were deployed to protect Polish airspace after Russian strikes targeted areas of western Ukraine near the border.
