The Ministry of Culture, the Region of Attica, and the Municipality of Piraeus are joining forces to support, ensure the smooth operation of, and further upgrade the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus through a new, joint programmatic agreement for cultural development with a total budget of €3,380,000 and a four-year duration.

The subject of the programmatic agreement is the organization, coordination, implementation, and financial and administrative support of a comprehensive and multi-level program of cultural, artistic, educational, and scientific activities at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, as well as ensuring its smooth, uninterrupted, and sustainable operation as a modern and dynamic cultural institution.

More specifically, it includes the planning, production, and presentation of high-quality artistic activities in the fields of theatre, music, dance, literature, and the performing arts in general, with emphasis on both classical and contemporary dramaturgy as well as new artistic creation; the development of educational and training programs, workshops, seminars, and cultural education activities for children, young people, adults, cultural professionals, and broader social groups, with the aim of expanding participation in and access to culture; the implementation of social and community initiatives, as well as outreach actions and the theatre’s connection with the local community, educational institutions, cultural bodies, and cultural networks at local, national, and international level; the organization of scientific events, one-day conferences, symposia, and research activities highlighting theatrical history, contemporary artistic practice, and the role of the performing arts in modern society; the coverage and support of the operational, technical, and organizational needs of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, including requirements for equipment, technical infrastructure, human resources, and services necessary for its uninterrupted operation and the high-quality implementation of its artistic program; and the safeguarding of stability and continuity in the theatre’s artistic and administrative planning over the medium and long term, with the aim of upgrading its cultural identity and strengthening its role as a reference point for the city of Piraeus and the wider metropolitan area.

“With the signing of this Programmatic Agreement, we are substantially strengthening one of the country’s most emblematic cultural institutions. The Municipal Theatre of Piraeus is not only a historic building of high architectural and artistic value, but a living cultural organism, inextricably linked to the identity, history, and contemporary dynamism of the city,” stressed Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni after today’s signing of the agreement. She added: “The strategic cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and Local Government ensures continuity, stability, and quality in the theatre’s artistic programming, creating the conditions for the development of high-level productions, enhanced outreach, and broader access of citizens to culture. Our goal is for the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus to continue to function as an open, modern, and inclusive cultural space that supports new creation, fosters dialogue with society, and contributes substantially to the cultural development of the wider area. The partnership between institutional bodies demonstrates that culture, when planned with consistency and cooperation, can be a powerful driver of sustainable development and social cohesion.”

The Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, noted that the signing of the Programmatic Agreement to strengthen and upgrade the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus is an act of substance—a shared commitment that culture requires planning, continuity, and stable support. “Together with the Minister of Culture and the Mayor of Piraeus, we are joining forces in a strategic collaboration to ensure the smooth operation and further development of a living cultural cell for the city of Piraeus and our Metropolitan Attica. Because for us, in the Region of Attica, culture is not a luxury. It is a democratic right and, at the same time, an investment in social cohesion, education, development, and the international outward orientation of the country’s capital region. We want the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus to remain an open and contemporary space that produces work, cultivates participation, gives voice to creativity, and brings citizens closer to art. With consistency and steady cooperation with the State and our municipalities, we support cultural infrastructures that keep the identity of our neighborhoods alive and improve the quality of life and everyday experience of our fellow citizens,” he stated.

For his part, the Mayor of Piraeus, Giannis Moralis, emphasized: “The signing of the programmatic agreement by the Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Piraeus, and the Region of Attica for the four-year financing of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus constitutes a substantial institutional guarantee for its stability, continuity, development prospects, and artistic strengthening. With this agreement, the possibility of organizing high-quality cultural and scientific activities is ensured, as well as the implementation of free workshops, with the aim of broadening citizens’ participation—especially that of young people—in culture. Another important parameter is that the laws under which our Municipal Theatre is required to operate are not in line with today’s era and contemporary artistic reality, and the funding helps cover part of the gaps that arise, so as to maintain the Theatre’s high-level artistic profile. The Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, as an emblematic cultural monument and living organism of creation, has for decades played a decisive role in the cultural life of the city of Piraeus and of the country as a whole.
