A group of European countries, led by Britain and Germany, is discussing plans to boost their military presence in Greenland to show U.S. President Donald Trump that the continent is serious about Arctic security, Bloomberg News reported today.

Germany will propose creating a joint NATO mission to protect the Arctic region, the Bloomberg report adds, citing people familiar with the plans.

Trump had said on Friday that the U.S. must acquire Greenland to prevent Russia or China from taking it in the future. The U.S. president has repeatedly said Russian and Chinese ships are operating near Greenland, which the Nordic countries have denied.

Berlin: The US should discuss North Atlantic security concerns within NATO

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefull said today that security concerns in the North Atlantic should be discussed within the NATO alliance.

“If the American president is considering threats from Russian or Chinese ships or submarines here in the region, we can, of course, find answers to that together,” Vandefuhl said.
