Meeting at Maximos Mansion sets agenda on: Traffic in Attica, smart traffic lights, new road links, truck limits on Kifissos

The Kifissos highway is a top government priority — Improvements in public transport frequency across Attica expected by the end of 2026 — Proposals discussed in detail

Newsroom January 28 01:35

Efforts to ease Attica’s chronic traffic congestion, with particular emphasis on the Kifissos highway, were discussed on Tuesday during a closed-door briefing and policy meeting held at Maximos Mansion under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to government sources, the proposals presented were structured on three levels: short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures.

Short-term measures include steps to reduce — though not fully ban — heavy truck traffic on the Kifissos highway, as well as improved management of daily incidents that frequently cause major delays.

Medium-term proposals include the introduction of smart traffic lights, a system that has already delivered positive results in Thessaloniki and is now being examined for implementation in Attica. In addition, a significant increase in the frequency of public transport services across Attica is expected by the end of 2026.
