Greek Parliament: Clash over incidents at Nikaia General State Hospital

A political clash erupted in Hellenic Parliament over the incidents that took place at Nikaia General State Hospital during a visit by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis

Newsroom February 19 05:08

Speaking in the Plenary during the debate on a bill for disaster prevention, New Democracy parliamentary spokesperson Makarios Lazaridis described the events as an “unacceptable attack” carried out by “pathological minorities” with no connection to the healthcare sector.

“In democracies, protest is legitimate. Violence is not,” Lazaridis said. “Some members of the Communist Party of Greece and ANTARSYA did what they did to Mr Georgiadis. It is shameful and unacceptable. These attacks should be condemned by all parties.”
Addressing the benches of SYRIZA, he added: “When some provoke incidents, they will face the reaction of the law. Period.”

Zambaras: “A disgrace for the government to strike doctors and workers”

Earlier, SYRIZA parliamentary spokesperson Miltos Zambaras took the floor, calling the incident “a disgrace—not only for your minister, but for the government as a whole.”

He accused the government of prioritizing image-making and communication stunts, saying it “went so far as to strike doctors and workers at a public hospital who were protesting and disrupting your narrative that the healthcare system is being upgraded.”

Zambaras further accused Georgiadis of reviving the so-called “theory of the two extremes,” calling it “ahistorical and ridiculous.” He argued that the reality, as he put it, is that “on one side are patriots, activists, communists—people who selflessly give everything for their country—and on the other are collaborators, including those who saw the photos from Kaisariani and later committed acts of vandalism by destroying the memorial.”
