Hydra has been moving to Hollywood rhythms in recent hours, as Brad Pitt has settled on the island for the filming of his new movie titled “The Riders.” However, special interest also surrounds the house where the movie star is staying.

According to information from protothema.gr, Brad Pitt will spend his private time during his stay on Hydra at the villa of the family of American journalist Stephen Colbert, which previously belonged to Kostas Boutaris of Boutaris Winery.

(Kostas Boutaris)

The property that went to auction

The Hydra home now hosting Brad Pitt was auctioned in 2022 as part of the well-known case involving the financial liabilities of Konstantinos Boutaris.

Specifically, it is a property on a plot with a total area of 4,636.58 square meters, a figure that reflects the true scale of the estate.

According to reports at the time, the final sale price was approximately €2.3 million. The size of the plot, its location, and the character of the residence placed it among the island’s most prominent homes from the outset, explaining the strong interest generated by the auction.

On the property there is:

  • A two-story residence consisting of a ground floor of 236.67 sq.m. and a first floor of 236.67 sq.m.
  • A separate ground-floor building of 44.26 sq.m.
  • Another ground-floor structure of 38.44 sq.m. with a basement guesthouse of 26.37 sq.m.
  • A ground-floor storage building of 29.98 sq.m.
  • A small private chapel, the Holy Church of the Holy Trinity
  • A 70 sq.m. swimming pool

From auction to the Colbert family

According to protothema.gr, the residence now belongs to the family of Stephen Colbert, the well-known American host and central figure of the late-night television program The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The same sources report that the purchase was made with the aim of having one of his two sons manage the property. The famous host has three children: Peter, John, and Madeline.

The connection to Colbert is particularly interesting given his recent reference to Greece, when he publicly described being here on vacation at the time he was informed of the — temporary — cancellation of his show following remarks about Donald Trump. In his account, he humorously mentioned that he was “offshore” and spending his days enjoying spinach pie and Greek rosé wine.

At the time, that reference was not officially linked to this specific property or to Hydra, but current information surrounding the house paints a clearer picture of the family’s relationship with Greece.

Colbert is not merely a well-known TV presenter, but one of the most recognizable figures in American television and political satire over the past two decades. He rose to prominence through The Daily Show, followed by The Colbert Report, and today hosts The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, CBS’s leading late-night program with steady influence on American public discourse — from politics to pop culture. The show is broadcast from the historic Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City and remains a landmark in the American television landscape, with international reach and strong ratings and awards presence.

Hydra as a backdrop — Brad Pitt at the center

Brad Pitt’s stay at the property is part of the broader filming activity temporarily turning Hydra into an international cinematic hotspot. In recent days, images of the actor’s daily life on the island — from his movements to filming moments — have circulated widely, boosting interest both in the production and in the island itself.

This is not the first time Hydra has served as the backdrop for an international production or high-profile presence. However, the Pitt case carries particular weight. It combines the global exposure of an A-list name with a property that already has its own history in Greek current affairs — from its auction and financial dimension to its present use by another internationally renowned figure.

The “second life” of an emblematic property

Ultimately, the residence has entered a new phase: from a private villa with strong symbolism to an internationally spotlighted property now associated both with Stephen Colbert’s family and — at least temporarily — with the presence of Brad Pitt.

The only unknown remains the financial terms of Pitt’s stay. The rental fee has not been disclosed or confirmed by the parties involved. However, according to reports, the mediation for the lease was handled by a Greek real estate rental company based in Athens.

Even without that detail, the essence of the story is already compelling: a Hydra property once owned by Kostas Boutaris, auctioned in 2022 for €2.3 million, now linked to the Colbert family and hosting one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
