Evros on emergency alert as floodwaters submerge entire plain

Extensive flooding in Soufli, Feres, Lavaras, Didymoteicho and Orestiada - The northern junction of Lavaras remains closed, as the water has entered the settlement

Fani Charisi February 26 10:58

The Evros remains on a state of heightened alert as the river overflows have caused widespread flooding, with hundreds of acres under water and authorities closely monitoring the situation.

The greatest pressures are being recorded in areas such as Soufli, Lavaras, Feres, Tychero, Didymoteicho and Orestiada, where large amounts of water have flooded farmland and are in close proximity to residential areas. Residents remain on alert as the volumes of water arriving from Bulgaria via the Evros River and its tributary Ardas are particularly high.

“It’s a phenomenon that’s evolving over the last month. The level of 3.25 meters reached 7.7 meters,” Professor of Geomorphology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Vouvalidis told ertnews.

According to available data, approximately 1,600 cubic meters of water per second is discharged into the river, mainly from the Ivailovgrad dam. As a result, extensive areas in the plain of Soufli, Tychero and other regions are flooded or in imminent danger.

The situation is also particularly difficult in the Erythropotamos region, near Didymoteicho, where large areas are already covered by water. In Lavaras, a warning message from 112 was sent yesterday in the early hours of the morning, urging residents to remain alert, while it was reported that within a few hours the water level rose by up to 2.5 meters.

Meanwhile, the northern junction of Lavara remains closed as significant amounts of water have entered the settlement from the plain. In some places, the water level is up to six metres high, while authorities continue to monitor the embankments.

According to the measurements at the Pythios station, the river level showed a slight decline, which is partly attributed to overflow and dam breakage both in Bulgaria and in Turkey, near Adrianople, where part of the water is discharged.

At the same time, the region was visited by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was briefed by the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the mayors of the affected areas. As he announced, infrastructure projects worth a total of 30 million euros are planned through the Integrated Spatial Investment, aiming to strengthen infrastructure and water resources management in the region.

The relevant authorities remain on alert, as the development of water levels largely depends on the inflows from neighbouring countries and the weather conditions in the coming days.
