Difficult night for several areas of the country - Streets rivers and dozens of calls to the Fire Brigade for water pumping

Newsroom April 2 08:44

Greece has experienced an extremely difficult 24 hours due to the “Erminio” bad weather, which hit many areas of the country with particular severity.

Except for the Attica basin,, which was severely affected, islands such as Rhodes, Poros, and Sikinos experienced the intense effects of the bad weather, including torrential rain and flooding.

Severe passage of bad weather from Rhodes

More specifically, Rhodes experienced a difficult evening as the island was hit by gale-force southerly winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour. At the same time, as ERT reported, waves in the harbour were more than 3 metres high. In fact, the rushing waters overflowed in the Municipal Units of Empona and Mandriko, while in many areas, tree falls and property damage were recorded.

In fact, in Rhodes, even 112 was enforced to limit travel. Specifically, shortly before 11:00 p.m., a 112 was issued asking residents to limit their travel to the absolute minimum necessary until Thursday morning

According to the same reports, at Diagoras airport, strong winds caused dozens of flights to be cancelled, with at least 10 charters changing course and heading to other destinations such as Kos and Antalya in Turkey. Meanwhile, ships remained tied up due to the dangerous winds.

It is noted that by decision of the South Aegean regional governor George Hadjimarkos, the operation of all school units, all educational levels, throughout the Cyclades and the Dodecanese was suspended for today, Thursday, April 2, for the preventive protection of public safety.

Dark night in Poros too

Poros also experienced extremely difficult times, with calls to the fire brigade topping 133. Flooding was recorded in the area, while two vehicles were swept away by rushing water.

A small bridge collapsed, while in the Ashkeli area, cars were washed out to sea. The fire brigade carried out an operation to rescue two elderly people, as well as to pump water from flooded houses.

Flooding in Sikinos, problems in Hydra, and Kimolos

In Sikinos, basements and roads near the port were flooded, while similar images were recorded in other areas of the Aegean, including Hydra and Kimolos. The waves reached the urban fabric, causing damage to coastal areas and serious disruption to the daily lives of residents.

According to kosnews24.gr, the intense bad weather also recorded the sinking of a boat in the port of Kos.
