A night that brings together religious sentiment with human anguish in the face of the inevitable, through two masterpieces of the 20th and 19th centuries, is the established Easter Concert to be performed by the Athens State Orchestra on the evening of Holy Wednesday, April 8, at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall.

Serving as a “prelude” is Schubert’s famous Unfinished Symphony, an evergreen example of expressive simplicity, pure spirituality, and formal perfection. It is followed by Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, a work that uniquely combines the timeless anxiety surrounding death with fervent anti-war messages. The program concludes with Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum, where the composer’s deep metaphysical reflection gives rise to imposing yet deeply emotional music—sound that evokes reverence and awe, much like that inspired by Europe’s grand cathedrals.

Four distinguished opera singers with notable international careers—Sofia Kyanidou, Mary-Ellen Nezi, Mario Zeffiri, and Petros Magoulas—join two choirs and the Athens State Orchestra under the musical direction of conductor Konstantinos Terzakis.
