Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has set out a new framework of rules governing the use of electric scooters, placing particular emphasis on protecting minors and strengthening road safety.

In a post on social media, Mitsotakis linked the new measures to all previous government interventions aimed at protecting children, including restrictions on the sale of alcohol and tobacco products to minors, initiatives targeting social media use, and measures against school bullying.

“Under 17s will no longer be permitted to use electric scooters on the road, nor to buy or rent them,” he said.

The prime minister also signalled stricter rules for all electric scooter users, with particular focus on their use on roads where high speeds are reached and, consequently, the risk of accidents rises significantly.

According to the announcement, every electric scooter will be required to carry compulsory insurance, while an electronic registry will be created to allow both the vehicle and its owner to be identified. “The way people get around cities day to day has changed, but it must be done safely,” Mitsotakis said.
