The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports has approved €2,294,500 in funding for the University of Thessaly to pay housing allowances to eligible students for the 2025–2026 academic year.

The funding will benefit 1,120 students enrolled at a university with campuses in Volos, Larissa, Trikala, Karditsa and Lamia, providing financial support to students studying away from their permanent residence and helping families cope with the cost of student accommodation.

Specifically, 1,011 students will receive a €2,000 housing allowance, while 109 students will receive €2,500, bringing the total funding to €2,294,500.

Supporting student welfare remains a key priority for the Ministry’s policy of strengthening public higher education by expanding opportunities for young people and providing meaningful assistance throughout their studies. At a university spread across five cities in Thessaly and Central Greece, housing support is considered especially important for students’ daily lives.

Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Sofia Zacharaki said:

“A young person’s ability to study in the city and at the university of their choice is directly linked to equal opportunities in education. We also know that behind every student studying away from home is a family making significant sacrifices to support that effort and meet the considerable cost of student housing.

Through nearly €2.3 million in funding for the University of Thessaly, we are providing tangible support to 1,120 students and their families in covering housing expenses. At a university with campuses in Volos, Larissa, Trikala, Karditsa and Lamia, student welfare is even more important.

We are investing in a public university that creates opportunities for every young person, regardless of where they grew up or their family’s financial circumstances. We want students to be able to pursue the education they choose while receiving the practical support they need to complete their studies and build the future they aspire to.”
