The mysterious radio signal from a planet beyond the Solar System: What exactly did scientists detect?

For the first time, astronomers report detecting radio emissions that appear to originate directly from a planet outside our Solar System.

Its name is Beta Pictoris b, a giant exoplanet located approximately 63 light-years from Earth, with a mass roughly 12 times greater than that of Jupiter.

A “Signal” from 63 Light-Years Away That Is Not a Message from Aliens

What researchers detected using the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa were recurring, strongly circularly polarized radio emissions at frequencies ranging from 0.85 to 3.5 GHz. The significant point is not that radio waves were detected, but that the position of the emission source corresponds to the planet itself, rather than its host star.

Scientists are not claiming that the “signal” comes from aliens. Their explanation is as follows: “This is natural radio emission associated with the planet’s magnetic field. Similar radio emissions are also observed from planets in our own Solar System, such as Jupiter.”

The Real Significance of the Radio Signal Discovery

This particular type of radio emission can be used as a “detector” of a planet’s magnetic field. Researchers attribute it to the so-called electron cyclotron maser mechanism, a process in which energetic electrons interact with a magnetic field and generate radio waves. The highest frequency at which the emission is observed is linked to the strength of the magnetic field in the region where the radiation is produced.

Based on this interpretation, scientists estimate that the magnetic field in the emission region is at least approximately 1.25 kG. This is an impressively strong field, although the researchers clarify that this figure represents a lower limit for the region where the radiation is generated, rather than a direct measurement of the planet’s entire magnetic field.
