EC VP: Greek banks covered by ECB for next few days

Dombrovskis: We are examining a plan-B in case talks break down

Newsroom July 12 09:34

European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis told US network CNBC on Sunday that it appears the European Central Bank will cover Greek banks for the next days of weeks while talks between Athens and its European creditors are ongoing.

He underlined that even though the ECB was an independent entity, and made its decisions based on its own rules and regulations, the liquidity needs of Greek banks were part of the negotiations.

Responding to a leaked plan by German FinMin Wolfgang Schauble  for a 5-year Grexit, the EC official said the EU was always ready for a plan-B in the event talks fell through.

Dombrovskis repeated that main issue at this point was the lack of trust towards the leftist Greek government by its partners, over  whether the country would be able to deliver on its promises. He avoided taking a position on reports that Berlin had essentially given up on Greece and wanted to drive the country out of the Eurozone.
