For one Sunday each November, the road between a battlefield on the Attic coast and a marble stadium in the center of Athens belongs to the runners.
The summer crowds have gone, temperatures typically sit between 54 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit (12 and 18 degrees Celsius), and the light over the Acropolis is low and clear. For runners, it is a chance to cover the original course. For the friends and family who come with them, and for anyone who likes to see a city organized around a story, it is an unusually good reason to visit.
For companions planning their own itinerary, or anyone staying a little longer, our guide to Athens in 48 hours brings together the city’s sights, museums and places to eat.
