Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis has announced a 30% increase in the heating allowance compared with last year, alongside a direct subsidy aimed at reducing the price of heating oil.
In a statement, Pierrakakis said the government’s priority was to support families and households struggling with rising energy costs. He outlined a two-part intervention comprising a direct subsidy at the pump, designed to bring down heating oil prices immediately, and a 30% increase in the heating allowance.
Pierrakakis’s statement in full
“At a difficult time internationally, with the energy crisis putting households around the world under strain, our priority is to ease the pressure on families. That is why we are introducing two forms of support for heating oil: a direct subsidy at the pump, which will immediately reduce the price, and a 30% increase in the heating allowance compared with last year. This measure will benefit hundreds of thousands of families across the country,” Pierrakakis said.
“We cannot stop a global energy crisis. But we can ensure that citizens are not left to shoulder its burden alone, and we will stand by them for as long as necessary. The full package of measures will be detailed tomorrow by Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou and Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Thanos Petralias,” he added.
