The visitors of Ancient Olympia will now have the opportunity to enjoy another fascinating attraction in the area, a museum dedicated to the great ancient Greek scientist Archimedes of Syracuse.

Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287 BC – c. 212 BC) was an Ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Her is regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity.

The museum was recently inaugurated in Ancient Olympia and offers many interesting exhibits, including replicas of the famous scientist’s inventions.

The museum was an initiative of engineer Kostas Kotsanas who has been conducting research for the last 25 years on the life and work of Archimedes, based on the ancient Greek, Latin and Arabic literature, the angiographic information and the relatively few archaeological finds.

The purpose of the museum is to showcase this relatively unknown aspect of ancient Greek culture and to show that the technology of the ancient Greeks was surprisingly advanced for its time.
Kostas Kotsanas has managed to create replicas of Archimedes’ inventions, which are exhibited at the museum. The replicas include inventions such as Archimedean screw, the planetarium device, the odometer, the burning mirrors and war machines.

City mayor Thimios Kotzias stated in an interview that the museum will largely contribute to bring more tourists to Ancient Olympia.
