Anarchists attack Exarchia police station in broad daylight (photos)

Lawlessness in Athens

The situation of lawlessness in Athens, with leftist extremist and anarchist groups targeting metro stations, supermarkets or occupying hotels is escalating. In the latest incident, a group of 40 antiauthoritarian anarchists attacked the Exarchia police station, destroying a patrol car and citizen’s cars parked nearby, Sunday at 3.30 pm. The anarchists hurled molotov cocktail bombs against the police station and used sledgehammers and rocks in broad daylight, ignoring the the safety of innocent bystanders in the area of Exacrhia. The assailants fled the scene after the attack in the surrounding streets. Police are investigating to detect their whereabouts. This is the fourth incident of violence by the anarchist groups in the past couple of days, after a metro station in Petralona was attacked, a police motorcyclist was assaulted by a group of 40 and three raids happened in supermarkets in the area of Vyronas. Police estimate the attacks will continue and cannot predict the next target of the anarchists. The authorities says the increase of the attacks could be a result of an undeclared ‘turf war’ between various anarchist factions in Exarchia. No injuries were reported.
