Antonis Samaras is planning his next move

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is worried about the results of European elections and local elections

The Prime Minister believes that SYRIZA did not win since the election result does not signal the topple of the government. On the other hand, SYRIZA’s lead over New Democracy by three points is considered as a defeat of New Democracy. Mr. Samaras ‘s statement showed that he got the message of citizens. He said: “I know that we had two difficult years. I went all over Greece. I listened to all citizens carefully. I know their problems . I know what and how it should be changed. And we will move quickly. As quickly as possible.”

Mr Antonis Samaras and his staff process the results of elections and examine the conclusions. They believe, though, that the government stability is not at stake, as the elections showed.

They also believe that they have time to make their moves in order to correct the results. But, they recognize that time is limited because of SYRIZA’s lead in European elections. Mr. Samaras has a series of political moves available, but as for the economic policy he is committed to the agreements signed with the lenders. For example, he has to proceed pretty soon to pension subsidiary cuts and he is also committed to proceed to next layoffs in the public sector.

The Prime Minister seems to be determined to move within the next month in a government reshuffle that will also mark his intention to extend the government majority.

Apart from the government reshuffle and extend of the parliamentary majority, as for economy and everyday practices, his options are limited. It might be that SYRIZA did not succeed in toppling the government, but it achieved a victory that shapes the conditions in favor of the party for the upcoming months.

The political scene and government’s options will depend heavily on the EU partners and the attitude of the markets. In case both of them feel that they have to wait and see which will be the upcoming developments and until the political landscape is clear, the government will not benefit from this situation nor will the country.
