Asylum seekers should work for free, says Finnish gov’t

“The longer that people are idle, the more frustrated they become,” Finland’s employment minister said

Finland’s government launched measures to tighten its immigration policy according to which  asylum seekers will be asked to work for free and to acknowledge a “national curriculum” on Finnish culture and society.

The government will also create an information package on Finnish culture and society stressing the rights of women and children.

“The new set of measures will tighten our practices and erase possible attractiveness factors,” Prime Minister Juha Sipila told reporters, according to Reuters.
The government will start assigning work to asylum seekers who are eligible to work, since working would help relieve their frustration.

“It is not necessarily paid work, it could be something outdoors, some maintenance work at the reception center … The longer that people are idle, the more frustrated they become,” said employment minister Jari Lindstrom.
