Aegae (Aigai), modern-day Vergina, on CNN list for mysterious sites

One of the 20th century’s most important finds

An extensive report by CNN’s Travel section on the 10 UNESCO sites characterized by mystery and intrigue has been published, with Aegae (Aiges), the capital and later spiritual center of ancient Macedonia, amongst the entries.

The remains of the ancient site are better known today as Vergina, where the stunning Vergina tumulus is located.

The tumulus holds Philip II’s remains and was excavated in 1977. Discovery of the site is considered by many archaeologists as one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century.

The CNN also presented a brief history of Aegea, and the story behind the settlement, as well as the history of Philip, Alexander the Great’s father, who was murdered by one of his bodyguards.
