The US Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division is currently investigating the murder of a 50 year-old African-American by a Caucasian cop in South Carolina, according to an official DOJ statement.

The DOJ will be coordinating and cooperating with the FBI during the investigation. Local authorities state that video captured by a passer-by of the time of the shooting means that the police officer will be charged with Murder. The video depicts the police officer shooting the civilian in the back, eight times, as the man runs away after a very brief altercation with the officer. The man had been arrested during a routine traffic check.

The cop may be sentenced to death, or 30 years in prison. He is already held in the Charleston Country jail, according to local officials.
