Danger! Amphipolis burial mound risks collapse

One of the top 10 finds of 2014 cannot be open to visitors as winter rains have made the work unstable with danger of collapse

Deputy Culture Minister said that the Amphipolis tomb excavation site, one of the top ten most important findings of 2014, is now in danger of crumbling due to the weather conditions. Heavy rains created ponds, forcing mounds of dirt to cover most of the site.

“The surrounding wall with the wonderful Thasos marbles needs to be drained urgently,” said Xydakis, pointing to the urgency of drainage that needs to be carried out before Fall.

An emergency meeting between excavation crew and culture ministry officials decided on the importance of a study before restoration can be started. At the moment finances to fund the studies are lacking, endangering the unstable site from crumbling.

The Central Archeological Council will need to give approval before funding can be given.
