Draghi: Ball in Greek side’s court (See video)

He emphasized that a strong and comprehensive agreement was needed “very soon”

European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi on Monday called on the cash-strapped Greek government to make the “first move” in rapprochement with creditors.

“While all actors have to go the extra mile, the ball lies firmly with the Greek government,” he told the European Parliament’s committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.

Draghi, whose position as head of the European central bank means he’s a pivotal player in keeping liquidity flowing towards Athens, made the comment after talks between the radical leftist government and creditors’ representatives broke off.

What followed was the usual “blame game”, with Athens blaming the creditors for insisting on austerity measures and the creditors’ representatives saying the Greek side failed to present reliable alternative proposals.

Moreover, Draghi said a “strong and comprehensive agreement” between the two sides was needed “very soon.”
