Duke University returns Byzantine manuscript to Greece

The university is returning the manuscript that was removed from Mt. Athos in the Sixties

A Cultural Ministry announcement on Thursday announced the return of a 10th-century Byzantine manuscript to Greece after it was taken from the Mount Athos’ Dionysiou Monastery. Duke University’s decision to return the manuscript was praised by the Culture Ministry’s secretary general Lina Mendoni who underlined that this move comes after the return of a Byzantine period gospel from the Getty Museum in September. The gospel was stolen along with this manuscript in the Sixties.

Dionysiou Monastery is one of the twenty self-governing communities of monks living on Mount Athos. It is home to 50 monks.
