Megalomania meets the medieval in an ostentatious display by the Turkish President

Monday’s grand ceremony in the so-called White Palace and residency of the Turkish President of the Republic Tayyip Erdogan , could easily have been mistaken for scenes out of a movie.

In an attempt to show the historical and cultural continuity of the Turkish nation, the President of Turkey welcomed the 2nd President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas to the palace with 16 men dressed in war outfits.

However, many Turkish newspapers rushed to comment. Stating that the new “Sultan” is trying to pass an unacceptable new “custom”. They argued that these images have nothing to do with the state created by Kemal Ataturk.

The Sarai opened its doors in October and all Turkish media were “obliged” to devote a report in opulence, luxury and size of the palace which was constructed by Mr. Erdogan when he was still prime minister and was completed shortly after he became the Turkish President of the Republic.

It is obvious that Monday’s movement, was a grand gesture by Mr. Erdogan to show the Israelis that Palestinians have Turkey as an ally.
