EU sends stern message to Turkey to stop violating Greek sovereignty

The EU High Commissioner on Foreign Affairs responded to a question submitted by ND MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis

The European Union High Representative of the European Union and Minister for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell sent a clear message to Turkey and its belligerent acts against Greece and Cyprus responding to a question submitted by New Democracy MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis (EPP) at the European Parliament.

“Turkey must respect international law, including the Law of the Sea, and in particular the sovereignty of all EU Member States over its territorial waters, as well as all their sovereign rights in their maritime zones, including the rights are created by the islands “, he underlined in his reply to Mr.Kefalogiannis. Josep Borrell added that Turkey should stop infringing on the sovereignty of EU member states in their airspace.

Mr. Kefalogiannis asked what actions the European Commission intended to take regarding he “constantly escalating provocative actions of Turkey that challenge Greek sovereignty and Greek sovereign rights.”

The High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission – recalling the conclusions of the March 2018 European Council and that the EU, on 15 May 2020, condemned “the escalation of Turkish violations in Greek airspace, including overflights of residential areas and “Turkey must be firmly committed to good neighbourly relations, international agreements and the peaceful settlement of disputes by appealing to the International Court of Justice, if necessary.”
