Extreme weather warning issued – Landslides in Santorini, Mykonos streets flooded (videos-photos)

The phenomena will last until the end of the week

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) issued an extreme weather warning on Wednesday.

Based on the latest forecast data, the standing extreme weather warning bulletin is being upgraded to an Emergency Hazardous Weather Bulletin, due to the high amounts of rain and intensity of the phenomena, from tonight (Wednesday 24-08-2022) until tomorrow evening (Thursday 25-08-2022) for the following areas:

A. For the sea-coastal parts of eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the islands of the northern Aegean (mainly Limnos, Samothraki, and Thassos) from today early evening until the morning hours tomorrow Thursday.

B. For central Macedonia (mainly the prefectures of Halkidiki, Pieria, and Imathia as well as for the seaside parts of the prefecture of Thessaloniki) from today evening until the early afternoon tomorrow Thursday.

C. For the Sporades, Thessaly (mainly the prefectures of Magnesia and Larissa), central and northern Evia, and the northern parts of eastern Sterea (mainly the prefecture of Fthiotida) from tonight until tomorrow night, Thursday.

The Emergency Bulletin (AA 18/2022) is still valid until Friday 26-08-2022 for most areas of the country, with heavy rains and storms, which will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning, hail, and thunderstorms, during the phenomena, of strengthened gusty winds.

Storms have been occurring since the morning in various areas of Attica.

Due to the intense weather phenomena, the alleys of Mykonos were flooded, while a water turbine was created near the area of ​​Kalafati.

Kozani: Eordaia

The region is in a state of emergency after the General Secretary of Civil Protection Vassilios Papageorgiou decided to declare a Civil Protection Emergency in the Municipality of Eordaia of Kozani, in order to deal with emergencies and manage the problems that arose from the severe storm that hit on Monday night in the area.

There are also problems due to the intense phenomena in Santorini where there are landslides in the port and power outages.

Attica “drowned”

Yesterday’s heavy rain in Attica caused many problems on the roads, mainly in the southern and western suburbs, but also in Gazi.

According to reports from the Fire Service, in the last 24 hours, there were 164 calls, 48 ​​for water pumping operations, eight tree cuttings, and seven rescues from vehicles. The most important problems occurred in the southern and western suburbs of the prefecture.

Some roads in the wider Attica region were closed due to water accumulation and falling trees.

According to the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, 40 millimeters of rain fell in just one hour, and over 2,500 lightning strikes.

Problems throughout the country

The problems in Thessaloniki were extensive, where hail also occurred. The Fire Service received calls for pumping water and cutting trees in areas of Central and Western Macedonia, Karditsa, and Tripoli.
