As emerged from the board’s meeting and was announced at the Athens Press Agency by the Workers Federation president Mr. Christodoulos Varkakis, the two factories of the Greek Sugar Industry in the towns of Serres and Orestiada are to close down immediately.

The president of the Workers Federation stated that in the near future some of the workers will be transferred to the only factory in operation left, while the rest of the workers will have to wait and see what will happen with them.

“It is most likely that motives urging those who wish to leave will be offered ” he stressed, adding that: “The closing of the two factories and the amendments to be made to them will result in saving significant funds for the company, both in the use of cheaper fuel and the reduction of labor costs. ”

Mr. Varkakis also explained that the two factories will save 8 million euro only by the change of use of the fuel, as the natural gas used until today will be replaced with liquefied gas that costs less.
