Francois Hollande fears religious tensions could rise in France

French President calls emergency Security Council

A day after the barbaric beheading of 84-year-old French priest, Father Jacques Hamel in a Church in Normandy by 19-year-old ISIS inspired jihadist, Adel Kermiche, the headlines of the French newspapers are filled with titles of indignation such as “He was murdered by the barbarians” by Le Figaro, “He martyred” by Le Parisien” and “Courage” by Liberation. The latest attack raises fears that a religious tensions could escalate in the country, which has the largest Muslim population in Europe. In an effort to ease religious tensions and prevent a possible escalation of strife, French President Francois Hollande has called an emergency meeting of his Security and Defence Council. Hollande met with religious leaders of all faiths, who asked for more security measures at their worship areas. The grand Mufti of Paris said the Muslim community condemned the sacrilegious act against the French priest saying it did not represent the values of Islam. Meanwhile, international media repeat statements by French politicians of a ‘religious war’, expressing disbelief how two knife wielding men could slaughter a priest in broad daylight, despite the draconian security measures imposed by the French authorities after a series of bloody terrorist attacks on French soil.
