German Ambassador rules out Grexit, supports Greece

Germany is beside Greece to offer help in clamping down on traffickers

German ambassador to Greece Peter Schoof said there is no issue of a Grexit in regards to Greece on Tuesday. He said that it is imperative that Greece be supported during the refugee issue in order to protect the Schengen area.

Schoof spoke at an event organized by the “Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe.”

“The issue of Grexit belongs to the past. Neither the German Chancellor not the German Finance Minister wanted that,” said Schoof and added that the “monetary union itself as it has been established based on the Maastricht treaty, presents significant deficiencies.” Nonetheless, he clarified that the single currency was not a mistake. “Within the framework of geopolitics, it was a correct idea. But these deficiencies are now obvious and we did not work sufficiently in order to correct them.”

The ambassador stated that Germany wants to find a solution to the refugee crisis by combating traffickers, the fair distribution of refugees in EU member states and changing Eastern Europe’s attitude on the refugee issue.
