Greece: Professor Giorgos Grammatikakis died

He was hospitalized in Heraklion hospital with respiratory failure – He was rector of the University of Crete, elected MEP with “To Potami”

Professor Giorgos Grammatikakis passed away at the age of 84 on Wednesday morning.

Giorgos Grammatikakis was hospitalized for the last two days in the Intensive Care Unit with respiratory failure and died early this morning.

George Grammatikakis was born in Heraklion, Crete. He studied Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and continued with postgraduate studies at Imperial College, London.

He obtained his PhD in 1973 and his thesis was entitled “Analysis of some multiparticle final state in 10 and 6 GeV/c K-p interactions”.

From 1982 to 2006 when he retired and was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor, he was a professor at the Physics Department of the University of Crete.

From 1990 to 1996 he was dean of the University of Crete.

In 2014 he was elected MEP with “To Potami” and participated in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

He was also vice-president of the Board of Directors of the National Opera.
