The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation is proud to announce that its 2014/15 application is now available for eligible Greek American college students to apply. On June 20, 2015, the Foundation will distribute $250,000 in scholarship awards to 40 deserving undergraduates, as follows:
- Twenty (20) Awards of $10,000 based on academic achievement and financial need
- Twenty (20) Awards of $2,500 based solely on academic achievement
Since its establishment, the Foundation has awarded 264 Greek American students with over $2 million through Scholarship Awards and the Hellenic Birthright program. The $250,000 in annual scholarships is the largest amount awarded to Greek American students by any organization in the United States. Founded in 1998 by Chris P. Tomaras, he believes “By providing scholarships and educational programs to Greek American students who have the potential to become life-long achievers, we can strengthen our civic fabric and deliver enlightened and engaged citizens. I want to make sure that the best and brightest of our Community are dully recognized and those in need have the necessary resources to complete their education.”
Last year, it was estimated that over 21 million students were expected to enter college for the first time. Of those 21 million, over 15 million applied for some type of federal financial aid to pay for their higher education-putting them in deep debt before they even receive a degree. With the average cost of tuition rising each year, students and their families are faced with tough choices in today’s economic times. A young adult with a college degree will earn almost twice as much as someone with only a high school diploma. Financing a college education, however, is a challenge many face with no guaranteed assistance.
Undergraduate students of Hellenic descent from all fifty states are encouraged to apply. Applications should be postmarked by Saturday, January 31, 2015.
All applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident
- Must be of Hellenic descent
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited 4-year College/University
- Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5
- Must be 25 years of age or less
