Greek Community London: OPA! Get Ready for the Bishop Christophoros “Family Carnival Party”!

Calling all families in Camberwell and London

Newsroom March 11 08:24

Carnival is coming to Camberwell!

Hellenes and Hellenophiles of London, March 17th marks the beginning of a new annual tradition.

Bishop Christophoros Greek School in Camberwell invites you join them at their Family Carnival Party!

Celebrating community, culture and family entertainment, this event promises something for everyone, young and old. Founded in the early 60s by Bishop Christophoros, the school itself has held a place within the heart and lives of the Greek community in south London for multiple generations.

It ran its classes within St Mary’s church until the 90s, when the Bishop and the community were able to raise enough funds to build the current school and hall above on the land behind the church.

Since then, it has offered classes on Saturdays for children from nursery to A-Level, teaching not only the language but also aspects of the history and culture of Greece and Cyprus.

Today, along with classroom teaching, the school is making moves to modernise its students learning with more technological based teaching, including ties internationally acclaimed institutions and platforms.

It is also refreshing its ties to the community in the hopes of entwining Greek culture in to more of its students lives than just their Saturdays.

As more of us in the London Greek community become 2nd and 3rd generation members, the number of opportunities to interact with our roots seems to falter.

Carnival, with its history of turning things topsy turvy, is a perfect time to replenish our cultural stores!

Face painting, crafts, gaitanaki (may pole) and more await creative little hands, and, for those willing to try their hand at some traditional dancing, easy to follow lessons will be taking place.

When energies run low, a delicious selection of food – including, of course, souvlakia – will be available to fuel you for a little more fun.

With DJ Avgoustinos joining us playing his usual great mix of music, the afternoon promises to be one not to be missed!

Naturally, in the spirit of carnival, Fancy Dress is greatly encouraged!
