Greek Finance Ministry admits to errors in ENFIA

Payments need to be submitted at the end of the month and mistakes will be rectified in ENFIA calculations for 2015

The Greek Finance Ministry’s charges under the new uniform real estate ownership tax (ENFIA) – released to owners using an online system – are full of errors and oversights. Tax accountants around the country are claiming that there are many cases of properties being excessively charged.

The Finance Ministry issued a statement assuming responsibility for the errors: “Distortions and omissions, due to the non-exhaustive consideration given to all the special cases envisaged by law, led to excessive calculations, especially as regards to some land plots in rural areas.” Nonetheless, payments need to be submitted at the end of the month even in cases where the accounts are erroneous in the hope that the 3.2 billion-euro revenue targets are met. False information on which statements were calculated will need to be rectified by November 30, however overpayments won’t be returned. Instead, they will be balanced out with ENFIA charges for 2015.

A draft modification was submitted to Parliament yesterday to make amendments so that some groups of people won’t have to pay. It is estimated, that 810,000 owners are being called to pay ENFIA that is less than 10 euros.
