Greek Orthodox Church discord with Education Minister Filis deepens

Holly Synod issues statement against Greek Minister

The feud between the Greek Orthodox Church and Education Minister Nikos Filis has flared up again, following the recent statements made by Filis that religious studies in schools should take the form of comparative lessons and be open to all religions. The Greek Church’s Holy Synod in its June session expressed its dissatisfaction over the statement by the Greek Education minister, stressing Filis had made disdaining and offensive remarks against the current religious studies by dubbing them ‘catechetical or confessionary’. In the statement released, the Synod claimed the current religious studies were not confesionary, but rather epistemic and cultural, as many committes had decided.
