High-security inmates beat prestigious Harvard and West Point debate teams

The prisoners won despite restrictions to the material they could use in their preparation

Inmates convicted of violent crimes at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility in the Catskill mountains beat Harvard’s debate team, picking up the world debate championship last year. The team had to defend the argument that “Public schools in the United States should have the ability to deny enrollment to undocumented students.”

The team didn’t fluke it as the same high-security prison debate team also beat the prestigious US Military Academy at West Point last year despite having handicaps in preparation, such as internet restrictions and limitations to the materials they could use.

The Harvard team acknowledged defeat with a Facebook post:

There are few teams we are prouder of having lost a debate to than the phenomenally intelligent and articulate team we faced this weekend, and we are incredibly thankful to Bard and the Eastern New York Correctional Facility for the work they do and for organizing this event.
