Holy Wednesday and the sacrament of the Holy Unction

Churchgoers will visit churches to receive the sacrament of the Holy Unction where parishioners are anointed with oil, and the grace of God

Holy Wednesday is the time when the Service of Holy Unction is held. The priest makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each congregation member, especially sick people and children. Cotton balls of holy oil are given to parishioners to take home as a keepsake.

In some areas of Greece, especially around Eastern Thrace, housewives would knead oblation bread to take to church to be blessed.

In other areas, children visit houses for special Easter carol singing. Instead of money, they are given eggs.
