The residents of an historic hilltop town in Sicily decided to put 20 empty properties on the market for just one euro in order to attract new investment to the area.
Byers would have to proceed to renovation works and pay a €5,000 guarantee to ensure that they will refurbish the homes.
The improvement works, the cost of which reaches about 35 000 euro for each house, should be completed within five years, after which the houses will be supervised by the authorities to make sure that they comply with the Italian laws.
Two of the houses have already been bought by an Italian businessman and his Russian wife who live in Abu Dhabi.
