Italian Eurosceptics gather signatures for referendum on EZ exit

Signatures for Italian eurozone exit

Italy’s influential Italian Eurosceptic political party, Five Star Movement (M5S), has collected over 100,000 signatures for a petition calling for a law that would allow a referendum on Italy’s withdrawal from the eurozone.

Beppe Grillo, head of the M5S, who won 25% of the vote in his first parliamentary election in 2013 said that the Italian government has not been effective in restoring jobs and helping people. “Leave the euro and defend the sovereignty of the Italian people from the European Central Bank,” he told his supporters.

Grillo hopes that the growing support that his party is receiving will allow it to gather the million signatures required and push the idea through his country’s Parliament by December 2015.
