Katrougalos: “Our goal is not to reduce pensions!”

Speaking to CNN, the Greek Labor Minister said that pension reductions are not on the government’s mind, unless of course the social security system is not viable

Labor Minister George Katrougalos told CNN Greece that the government’s goal is to implement uniform rules that would apply for all pensioners.

Asked if pensions over 1,000 euros will be reduced, Katrougalos said that the government’s aim is not to reduce pensions, but to create a viable social security system.

“Our aim is not to reduce pensions. This is what the previous government did,” said Katrougalos. “We had ten pension cuts in the memorandum (bailout) period. Our aim is to render the system sustainable, but without putting pressure on the state or smaller pensions.”
