Kumanovo massacre fuels FYROM crisis

Both political and social sides of the country have deep-rooted problems

The city of Kumanovo, in neighbouring FYROM, looks like a battlefield, with town’s Albanian quarter the focal point after the clashes over the weekend between an armed group of men and and government forces. Twenty-two people lost their lives.

The Kumanovo clash has fueled the latest crisis in FYROM, with the Skopje government blaming Kosovans for orchestrating the attacks. According to the ministry of interior, the heads of the “terrorist group” in Kumanovo were five Kosovo residents, also members of UCK.

The Skopje government which is already mired in corruption and call monitoring scandals is facing an ever-rising wave of lack of confidence in the government, fueled by the opposition. On their side, the EU and NATO are calling for calm negotiations.
