Lebanese man arrested on Cyprus after 2 tons of bomb-making material seized

Links to extremist groups probed

A Lebanese man travelling under a Canadian passport was arrested on Thursday in the Cypriot coastal town of Larnaca after authorities recovered two tons of potential bomb-making material in his apartment.
The suspect, 26, had reportedly been under police surveillance.
According to reports, more than 400 boxes of ammonium nitrate were seized along with 10,000 euros.
The case has already drawn the attention of the island’s intelligence services, with the suspect being investigated for possible ties to one of Lebanon’s extremist groups, including Hezbollah.
The man claimed, in an appearance before a magistrate, that he didn’t know how the fertilizer wound up in his residence.
According to reports, arrest warrants for other individuals are pending.
