Meet the spooky black seadevil (video)

Black seadevils are remarkable for the appendage that resembles a flashlight

During their exploration in Monterey Bay off the coast of California, a research team from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute spotted an strange-looking deep-sea anglerfish and managed to capture the first ever video of the elusive creature in its habitat.

This peculiar creature is known as a black seadevil and it is rarely photographed in it natural environment. It should also be noted that the fish belongs to the genus Melanocetus, which may be translated from the Greek melanos meaning “black”, and cetus meaning either “whale” or “sea monster”.

Black seadevils are remarkable for the appendage that resembles a flashlight and helps them lure prey and also for their huge jaws.

Bruce Robison, a senior scientist who spotted the Black Seadevil last week at a depth of 600 meters told “USA Today” that he believes this is the first time such a creature was filmed alive and at depth.
