Varoufakis mostly tight-lipped after important first meeting with Draghi

“Greece has sent its message” was the Delphic statement by emerging ‘fashion icon’ Varoufakis from Frankfurt

“Greece has sent its message” was the Delphic statement by Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis moments after the end of his meeting in Frankfurt with European Central Bank (ECB) chief Mario Draghi. The meeting with the eurozone’s central banker was of heightened importance given that continued ECB liquidity towards Greece’s banking sector has emerged as a “linchpin” in the leftist government’s emerging “road-map” to avoid an extension of a bailout plan and to present its own “growth-centred” alternative.

“We had a fruitful conversation,” a noticeably less detailed Varoufakis told reporters immediately after the meeting, which he said focused on the Greek government’s proposal for dealing with the country’s mushrooming debt.

He also said Draghi reaffirmed the central bank’s support to the Euro zone.
