Mickoski: The new government will respect the Prespa Agreement, but I will call my country “Macedonia”

The future PM of North Macedonia accused Greece of "pre-election hysteria" in response to the reactions sparked by his & President Siljanovska's statements

Newsroom June 5 05:52

The leader of VMRO-DPMNE and future Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, reiterated today that the constitutional name of the country (North Macedonia) will be used in official communications between state institutions. However, he stated that in his personal statements, he will refer to the country as “Macedonia.”

Mickoski emphasized that the future VMRO-DPMNE government will respect the Prespa Agreement, including the name issue. He noted that official documents, including those certifying the tenure of their MPs, use the constitutional name. However, he asserted his right to freedom of speech, stating, “For me, my homeland is Macedonia, and it will remain Macedonia in all my statements.”

He also mentioned that he would support these views at the NATO Summit if the topic arises. Mickoski expressed a desire to build bridges of friendship and cooperation with neighboring countries, emphasizing that the Macedonian people are peaceful and hospitable. He expects the same behavior from neighbors, rejecting any form of aggressive behavior.

Mickoski claimed that the hysteria in Greece, which has spread to North Macedonia, is due to their pre-election campaign. Finally, he announced that he would receive the mandate to form a government from President Gordana Siljanovska tomorrow, following the parliamentary elections held on May 8, in which VMRO-DPMNE emerged victorious.
